Orthodox Music Print E-mail

(The 7th Song Wreath, manuscript) The Orthodox Musical tradition is by and large foreign to the western Christian ear and "mindset". While there are points of contact with western European music (particularly in the Russian tradition), it is a music which in its vision and style has (at least since the time of the western European dark ages) developed in a much different way. In part this has do do with the fact that during its dark ages the church of western Europe adopted the "low mass" as its norm, while in the east the sung or chanted liturgy has always been the norm. In part it has to do with the development of musical instruments in the west and their adoption for use by the Church, whereas in the east only the human voice was considered appropriate for musical expression in the Church.
